Several arrested in Texas on drug charges

On Behalf of | Feb 3, 2022 | Criminal Defense

Unfortunately, the opioid epidemic is still in full swing, which means there are a plethora of unscrupulous individuals who would seek to supply addicts with their drugs while capitalizing on their misfortune. However, those caught selling illegal opioids and other illicit drugs can face harsh consequences if convicted. This could be the case for nearly a dozen people so far in Texas.

Information regarding investigation and arrests

The Cedar Park Police Department conducted a two-year investigation into the apparent spike in overdoses in Central Texas that are attributed to counterfeit pills. During that time, around 23 overdoses were reported, and nine people apparently lost their lives due to overdose.  The CPPD reported that it used the information regarding those overdoses and deaths to help lead its investigation.

Cumulatively, officials say they were able to confiscate more than 100,000 counterfeit oxycodone pills that had also been laced with the powerful drug, fentanyl. They estimate the street value to be more than $1 million, and they issued 13 federal indictments against suspected perpetrators. So far, they have made 10 arrests, and the accused range in age from 18 to 23. The investigation also included Arizona, California and Oregon, as the drugs were apparently coming in from those states as well.

Right to defense counsel

Those arrested in the latest drug bust in Texas are facing very serious charges, and they could receive harsh sentences if convicted. As such, each of those charged will want to work directly with an experienced criminal defense attorney to help them protect their rights and increase their chances of obtaining a favorable outcome. A lawyer can analyze the procedures used during the investigation and subsequent arrest and challenge any evidence the prosecution seeks to offer against the accused.
